Agave angustifolia (aka espadin)
Espadin is similar to Agave tequilana weber azul in terms of size, water use, pests, and plant spacing. However, there are a few distinguishing factors. The plant is a lighter, more muted green color than the Weber Azul, and the spears at the end of its leaves are much longer and thinner. It is also hardier and recommended for USDA hardiness zones 9-11. Like Weber Azul, it produces clones after a couple of years and should mature near the same time frame. Some estimate this variety represents as much as 75-80% of all mezcal production.
